6 ft or 7 ft? How to Choose the Right Fence Height for Your Central Valley Home
Six feet is the standard, but seven feet is our most common upgrade request. Here is how to decide between them based on privacy, wind, cost and your property.

When homeowners call us about a new fence, one of the first questions is height. Six feet is the standard, and a 7 ft privacy fence is the upgrade we get asked about most. Both work well in the Central Valley, but they solve slightly different problems. Here is how we help customers in Modesto, Manteca, Turlock and nearby towns decide.
The Case for a 6 ft Fence
A 6 ft fence with a gate is our most popular install, and for good reason. It gives solid privacy for most yards, it is the easiest to price, and lumber is readily available at that size.
- Lower cost: Fewer materials per linear foot means a lower price on the same run of fence.
- Less wind load: A shorter fence catches less wind, which matters during our spring and fall gusts.
- Neighborhood fit: Most neighbors and HOAs are used to seeing 6 ft fences, so it rarely raises questions.
The Case for a 7 ft Fence
An extra foot sounds small, but it changes how the yard feels. If you have a two-story neighbor, a busy street behind you, or a pool and want more seclusion, 7 ft is worth a serious look.
- More privacy: Taller boards block more sightlines, especially from second-story windows.
- More sound and dust buffering: Helpful along busy roads and dry, dusty summer days.
- Better for larger dogs: A taller fence is harder for jumpers to clear.
Wind and Heat Considerations
Central Valley wind is the biggest reason a fence fails early. A taller fence acts like a bigger sail, so it needs solid construction to match. We set posts 8 feet on center for both 6 ft and 7 ft privacy fences and use premium redwood and cedar chosen for our heat and dry conditions. A well-built 7 ft fence holds up just as well as a 6 ft one, but a cheaply built one will not. If you are comparing quotes, ask how deep the posts are set and what spacing the contractor uses.
Permits and Local Rules
In the municipalities we serve, permits are generally not required for fences 7 ft and under. Front-yard fences and corner lots often have separate height limits, and HOAs can set their own rules, so check before you build. If you are unsure, we are happy to point you in the right direction during your estimate.
How to Decide
- Choose 6 ft if you want a dependable standard fence at the best price.
- Choose 7 ft if privacy is the top priority or a neighbor can see into your yard.
- Not sure? We can walk the property and show you what each height looks like from where you actually sit and stand.
